The French Indo-China silver Piastre is one of the many successors of the Spanish “piece of Eight” large size silver coins that had circulated in many parts of Asia since the seventeenth century. Arising from a need by many nations to develop commerce and trade with the Orient, the so-called Trade Dollars became almost ‘calling cards’ for western nations as trade with the China and the Orient exploded following the First and Second Opium Wars. As other European powers began their push into Asia, France had for the most part gone unchallenged with the exception being Vietnam who themselves had hopes of achieving greater amounts of territory. By 1885, the French introduced a new currency based on the silver piastre de commerce in order to increase monetary stability The obverse of the coins depicted a distinctive seated Liberty and headdress similar to that worn by the iconic Statue of Liberty, a gift to the American people from France in 1876 on the Centenary Anniversary of US Independence. The reverse side included a simple wreath with the inscription INDO-CHINE FRANCAISE – PIASTRE DE COMMERCE – A TITRE 0,900. POIDS 27 GR. denoting the coin’s original weight and fineness.

Inscribed on the band of the crown is “IN YOUR MAJESTY RIDE OUT VICTORIOUSLY”. Behind the lion is a reflective regal floral-like pattern that accentuates the beauty of this design. At the very bottom of the obverse are the specifications of the coin of “ONE TROY OUNCE” and the exceptional purity of “.9999 FINE SILVER”.

The reverse features a very similar design to that of past Roaring Lion Silver Coins. Like past years, the 2020 Roaring Lions is backed by Niue. This means that Queen Elizabeth’s famous profile image is pictured in the middle of the reverse surrounded by words. At the top of the coin is the word “NIUE”, to her right is “TWO DOLLARS”, to her left is “ELIZABETH II”, and below her image are the designer’s initials of “IRB” & “2020”.

The Aztec calendar is the calendar system that was used by the Aztecs as well as other Pre-Columbian peoples of central Mexico. It is one of the Mesoamerican calendars, sharing the basic structure of calendars from throughout ancient Mesoamerica.

The calendar consisted of a 365-day calendar cycle called xiuhpohualli (year count) and a 260-day ritual cycle called tonalpohualli (day count). These two cycles together formed a 52-year “century,” sometimes called the “calendar round”. The xiuhpohualli is considered to be the agricultural calendar, since it is based on the sun, and the tonalpohualli is considered to be the sacred calendar.

The calendric year may have begun at some point in the distant past with the first appearance of the Pleiades (Tianquiztli) asterism in the east immediately before the dawn light. But due to the precession of the Earth’s axis, it fell out of favor to a more constant reference point such as a solstice or equinox. Early Spanish chroniclers recorded it being celebrated in proximity with the Spring equinox.

In ancient cultures, stories about heroes and monsters were an important part of everyday life. They helped people explain objects in the sky, make sense of weather events, or answer life’s big questions. Born around the fire and evolved through word of mouth, tales of these creatures and their supernatural powers were told and retold millions of times from person to person, from trade port to trade port, and from generation to generation – manifesting into a hundred different versions around the world.

The Taj Mahal is known as the Crown of the Palaces and is a white-marble mausoleum. It was constructed along the Yamuna river near the city of Agra in India. Commissioned in 1632, the building serves as the tomb of the favorite wife of the Mughal emperor Shah Jahan. This fifth dragon in the series is known as the Indian and likely depicts Pakhangba, the supreme God of the Meetei tradition.

It became necessary to produce a special dollar for trading in the British Colony when the price of Silver rose rapidly in value between 1875 and 1895. The Silver price disturbed trading and resulted in a very serious shortage of minted dollars. To overcome the threat of a currency famine, The Royal Prerogative of the English sovereign gave approval in 1894 for the minting of a special British Dollar for general use in Far Eastern Trade.

The release of these Trade Dollars marked a significant change in Japan during which time the restoration of Imperial Authority was vested in Emperor Mutshuhito, who reigned from 1868 to 1914. His reign is known as the Meiji Era, which witnessed the introduction of rapid industrialization and manufacturing that transformed Japan into one of the world’s largest and most advanced economies.

Struck in a full ounce of highly pure 99.9% fine silver by KOMSCO, the official mint of South Korea, this impressive medal captures the Korean Phoenix like never before. Known as a the “Bong-Hwang” in South Korea, the bird has been the symbol of Korean nobility since the late 1300s when “The Phoenix Throne” was used to describe the rulers of the Joseon Dynasty. The phoenix still maintains a huge presence in South Korean culture and has even been integrated into the design of the nation’s presidential seal.

The phoenix takes center stage on this piece where it is depicted majestically hovering in the sky, wings spread wide almost in an embrace while clutching a symbolic orb of knowledge in its beak. The reverse design superbly depicts a pair of Phoenix facing each other and the South Korean flag. The designs are simply fantastic. Plus, each piece available in this offer comes in original Gem Brilliant Uncirculated (BU) condition, meaning that they are products of a superb strike that places your them firmly among the elite of the run. This perspective-based action scene is unequaled in any recent martial arts themed bullion coin offerings of which we are aware. Every aspect of this design is spot-on regarding the power of the deep focus involved in Taekwondo. The fist-punch displayed did not originate in the passionate emotional response of the combatant depicted. One glance at his expression demonstrates the quiet spirit out of which the punch was being delivered. This is a remarkable step forward in this new series, and one we hope to see expanded on in the years to come!

The obverse is consistent with the series, presenting a beautiful and active scene, featuring a Yin Yang symbol on the left center of the design. The darkness of the Yin is accented by slightly-angled fine, horizontal lines against the frosted background. The lightness of the Yang is from the unfrosted silver. A circle-inset fills the head of the Yang with the security feature of a latent image of the medallion’s fineness of “999” hidden within the fine vertical lines. The active part of the design is produced by swirls of heavier lines that appear to feed into the Yin from the top, and the Yang from the bottom. The overall design is very clean and attractive, with a nicely-textured frosted background. Inscriptions at the lower right include “2020” in a smaller type, with “KOREA” in a larger type stacked below.

The reverse is where the real action is! A young taekwondo fighter demonstrates a perfect upward, forward punch, originating from the center of his focused energy, ready to move in and finish the contest. Inscriptions include “TAEKWONDO . 1oz FINE SILVER 999.”

Asian cultures have a love of gambling that rivals anywhere else on Earth, so what better subject for a coin from the region that luck itself? The design of this one-ounce fine silver bullion coin is a composition of many of the elements associated with the concept of luck around the world. A slot machine is the main focus, but it, and the surrounding space, is replete with such iconic imagery as horseshoes, and four-leaf clovers. We’re not going to say this was something designed primarily for artistic style – this one is about the meaning more than anything else. The obverse of this Niue Island issue is a standard one, depicting Queen Elizabeth II for its main element.

Each of the coins in the 25,000 mintage comes with a small certificate of authenticity that has a serialised number on it. Nothing strange about that, of course, but there’s something a bit special about this one. On 28 March 2020, at 10am Korean time, there will be a live YouTube event in which one serial number of that 25,000 will be drawn to win a prize.

The Royal Australian Mint launched this limited mintage, 4-coin Triangular Australian Shipwreck series with the highly acclaimed inaugural release of the 2019 Batavia edition. This is the first ever triangular-shaped coin series struck in bullion. And the theme of this exciting series is absolutely perfect to showcase its stunning designs within the highly unique shape! Issued in 1 oz .999 fine silver and .9999 gold, both metal editions quickly caught the global attention of collectors and investors alike, resulting in a highly successful launch of the first two releases. The magnificent design and production excellence continues with this third release, 2020 1 oz Silver Triangular Australian Shipwrecks Zuytdorp coin.

The Zuytdorp launched for her third voyage with high expectations. This bright scene is captured on the rather unusual reverse design. Looking at the coin with the ship having set sail, expectations for a favorable voyage are high. However, the banner inscriptions are displayed upside down. Although quite unusual at first glance, this is a truly remarkable design and every bit as unique as the coin’s shape. Not until you rotate the coin to rightly display the banner will you see that, unfortunately for all aboard, the voyage ended in disaster, clouded in mystery.

There’s something special about wild horses running free, but the free-roaming mustangs of America’s West aren’t the world’s only wild horses. There are also herds of them roaming about the Australian Alps region in the nation’s Northern Territory and Queensland. These equine beauties are known as Brumby Horses or “Brumbies” in honor of James Brumby (1771-1838), an English soldier and pastoralist. Brumby was forced to turn loose the horses he had bred and raised in New South Wales after being transferred to Tasmania in 1804. Today, these feral creatures descended from Brumby’s original stock have come to symbolize Australia’s independent nature and ability to thrive in a hostile environment.

To pay tribute to these magnificent animals, Australia’s world-renowned Peth Mint has released a silver coin that depicts a Brumby Horse confidently galloping through a nameless stream. Struck in a full ounce of 99.99% pure silver, this legal-tender coin is a gleaming tribute to an Australian icon seen by many as symbolic of the nation’s rugged can-do character.

Each 2020-dated coin available in this offer also comes in original Brilliant Uncirculated (BU) condition, with razor-sharp designs exactly as they left the mint. 2020 Australian Kookaburra & Baby 2oz Silver Bullion Coin

Manufacturer: Perth Mint
Dimensions: 40.6 mm
Weight (grams): 62.206
Fineness: 999

The Next Generation Series from the Perth Mint launched in 2018 with two common factors for each coin in the collection. First, the design on the reverse always focuses on a mother and its baby. This started in 2018 with the Koala mother and her young baby, and continued in 2019 with the Crocodile mother and baby. Now, the series moves on to a third design with one of the continents most famous residents.

The term piedfort comes from the Middle Ages and refers to the coinage of the era that was often known as a heavy-foot style. These coins were thicker specimens with greater weight in a smaller diameter. Modern coins of this type represent that same reality with a 2 oz weight on a 1 oz coin diameter.

On the obverse face of 2020 2 oz Australian Mother and Baby Kookaburra Silver Coins, you will find the latest effigy of Queen Elizabeth II. The sixth-generation portrait of the Queen, this design was created by Jody Clark and is unique to Australian coins in its inclusion of the Queens shoulders in the design. This is the first time her complete neckline and shoulders have featured on an Australian denomination since 1966.

The reverse side of the 2020 Australian Mother and Baby Kookaburra Silver Coins features a depiction of a small baby kookaburra nestled up close to its mother. You can tell the little baby bird is hungry and the mother is no doubt ready to lend a hand.

The gold coin is ethically produced by Australian metal with three levels of security. Both coins are minted to .9999 purity.

In 1964, as Australia prepared to switch from pounds to dollars, the artist Stuart Devlin won a competition to design the country’s first decimal coins.

One of Devlin’s early drafts featured a view of the Australian continent alongside the iconic Southern Cross constellation. More than fifty years later, this design has been retrieved from the Royal Australian Mint’s historic collection and reimagined for the current release.

Unseen in the Northern Hemisphere, the Southern Cross constellation has guided travelers and explorers, inspired poets and musicians. It has been a symbol of loyalty and rebellion and remains one of the most meaningful and recognizable features in the southern skies.

2020 Black Flag The Royal Fortune 1oz Silver Bullion Coin

Manufacturer: Perth Mint
Dimensions: 40.6 mm
Weight (grams): 31.103
Fineness: 999

The Royal Fortune was captained by the legendary Pirate Black Bart,  This is the second subject of a new series of silver and gold bullion coins from the Perth Mint, Throughout the 17th and 18th centuries, pirates roamed the seven seas, with each ship displaying a unique “black flag” to announce its arrival and make clear mercy would be given only to those who surrendered.

Born in Pembrokeshire. In 1718, when he was second mate on the Princess, his ship was captured by the Welsh pirate, Howel Davis, and he was forced to serve under his captor. When Davis was killed, Roberts, who in six weeks had shown great courage and resourcefulness, was elected captain. He accepted, saying that since he had dipped his hands in muddy water it was better to be commander than a common man. Notoriety came speedily. He sailed into a fleet of forty-two Portuguese ships, ascertained which was the richest, boarded, and sailed off with her. Soon he struck terror everywhere. When he entered a harbour in Newfoundland, their crews abandoned the twenty-two ships there. After successes, the pirates went ashore at places like Surinam and Sierra Leone, indulging wild debauchery until their resources were exhausted. Not that success was unbroken; once at least they were long in extremities for want of provisions and water. One of their finest captures was a frigate built ship of the Royal African Company. Roberts renamed her the Royal Fortune. Captain Chaloner Ogle, R.N., managed to bring her to battle off Cape Lopez.

Roberts was killed (10 February 1722), and his body, in all its pirate finery, thrown overboard, as he had previously requested. His crew then surrendered. Bold as pirate captains were, Roberts’s calculated daring was exceptional. In a drink-sodden and blood-stained community he was comparatively temperate and humane.

Roberts’ own prophetic words; “I have dipped my hands in muddy water and if a pirate I must be, ’tis better being a commander than a common man.”

On the morning of 28 April 1656, a VOC ship called the Vergulde Draeck, travelling towards Batavia (now Jakarta) with a load of trade goods, coins, cargo, passengers and crew, struck an uncharted reef off the coast of Western Australia. The reef gutted the ship and only 75 of the crew survived, along with a small quantity of provisions and a single boat.
The under steersman, Abraham Leeman, took the boat and six crew on an astonishing and gruelling journey to Batavia and reported the wreck. Several attempts were made to rescue the survivors, but they were never located. The wreck of the Vergulde Draeck was discovered in 1963 and was excavated in 1972. Some 19,000 coins were recovered, mainly Spanish reals and some Japanese silver coins. The mystery of what became of the survivors of the Vergulde Draeck has never been answered. Icons are representations of the Heavenly. They are expressions of Orthodox Faith, teaching, and worship. The Greek word for “Icon” is, “Αγιογραφία,” which can be separated into two words:

  • Άγιο, meaning Holy or not of this world (Heavenly)
  • Γράφω, meaning to write

Therefore, Icons are not drawings or creations of imagination. Theyare in fact writings of things not of this world. Icons can represent our Lord Jesus Christ, the Virgin Mary, and the Saints. They can also represent the Holy Trinity, Angels, the Heavenly hosts, and even events. Orthodox icons, unlike Western pictures, change the perspective and form of the image so that it is not naturalistic. This is done so that we can look beyond appearances of the world, and instead look to the spiritual truth of the holy person or event. Icons can only be created with the blessing of the Church, as they are writings of Truth.

This species typically avoids deep waters, preferring coastlines and coral reefs where they can find sponges, a primary food source for these omnivores.

Beautiful creatures, they make incredible migrations in order to move from feeding sites to tropical beaches that often serve as nesting grounds. Hawksbill turtles come to New Zealand every year from Fiji. Although they’ve been sighted as far south as Cook Strait, they are mostly seen in the upper North Island of New Zealand in the clear, shallow waters of the island shelve.

Like many sea turtles, hawksbills are a critically endangered species due mostly to human impact. Hawksbill eggs are still eaten around the world despite the turtle’s international protected status, and they are often killed for their flesh and their stunning shells that are highly valuable in some marketplaces.

For years, fans of Star Wars™ labored under the delusion that Boba Fett had died after being inadvertently knocked into the jaws of the Sarlacc by a blinded Han Solo in 1983’s Star Wars VI: Return of the Jedi. But according to none other than George Lucas himself, the most feared bounty hunter in the galaxy did not die. Instead, his armor protected him from the creature’s digestive system, and he was able to escape after blasting a hole in the monster’s side.

Since then, Boba Fett has sought his revenge through novels, video games and comic books that are considered official cannon of the Star Wars Universe. And now, Boba Fett gets his due on the New Zealand Mint’s latest release in its Star Wars bullion coin series that shows an image of the infamous mercenary armed to the teeth and ready for action. It’s a dynamic, action-packed image struck in a full ounce of highly-pure 99.9% fine silver. In addition, the coin is officially licensed by Lucasfilm and Disney, so you know it lives up to the high standards Star Wars fans have come to expect.

Of course, Boba Fett’s similarity to a new Star Wars character has led to some confusion. Thanks to the hit Disney+ series The Mandalorian, some folks have been mixing them up. The difference, though slight, is significant. You see, Boba Fett is actually a clone of the Mandalorian bounty hunter Jango Fett, who raised him as his son. Boba was taught the ways of the Mandalorians and wears the same armor, but he was not raised in Mandalorian culture and has no place that he can truly call home.

2018 St Helena US Trade Dollar Restrike 1 oz Silver Bullion Coin

It became necessary to produce a special dollar for trading in the British Colony when the price of Silver rose rapidly in value between 1875 and 1895. The Silver price disturbed trading and resulted in a very serious shortage of minted dollars. To overcome the threat of a currency famine, The Royal Prerogative of the English sovereign gave approval in 1894 for the minting of a special British Dollar for general use in Far Eastern Trade.

These coins were given an Eastern look to help ensure acceptance by countries outside of British dominion. They also did not indicate a country of origin on the coin which helped allow them to circulate throughout China where they were readily accepted as a medium of exchange. To indicate that the coin was genuine, Chinese merchants would occasionally stamp the coins with a “chopmark” or “counterstamp” to indicate that the coin was genuine or perhaps to advertise their businesses. Chopmarks do not adversely affect the value of these coins in the secondary marketplace.

2018 Gibraltor Royal Coat of Arms 1oz Silver Bullion Coin

In the late 12th century, the Plantagenet King Richard I of England, affectionately known as King Richard the Lionheart, displayed the first-ever Royal Arms of England. The escutcheon (or shield) originally bore 1-2 lions, but a third lion was eventually added by King Richard I – Three lions passant guardant.

King Richard the Lionheart’s Royal Arms of England three lions design would come to serve as the symbol of the King of England and the personal coat of arms of nearly every Plantagenet King for the next 200 years, approximately. King Richard’s three lions remained until 1369 when the Plantagenet King Edward III altered the Royal Arms design to include the fleur-de-lis, reputedly in an effort to strengthen his claim to the French crown.

Beyond the aesthetic appeal of the coin itself, the incorporation of the Tudor Rose into the design signifies the passing of the Plantagenet Dynasty and the birth of the Tudor Dynasty. In the War of the Roses Henry Tudor (King Henry VII) was victorious over King Richard III, the final Plantagenet King.

2018 Isle of Man Angel 1oz Silver Proof Bullion Coin

Each of these 2018 1 oz Isle of Man Silver Angel Coins is available inside of an individual protective capsule. These coins have what the mint considers a “proof quality” appearance. The coins have frosted design sets which stand out against the proof-like background of the coin.

The Saint Michael design on these Isle of Man coins is inspired by the Medieval Gold Angel coin. This coin was first issued by King Edward IV of England in 1465 as a new issue of the noble coin from the 13th century, Englands first mass-produced gold coin. The value of the original Gold Angels ebbed and flowed over time, ranging from 6 shillings 8 pence to 11 shillings.

On the reverse of the 2018 1 oz Isle of Man Silver Angel Coin is the image of Saint Michael slaying the dragon. This classic concept of the archangel Michael conquering the dragon has been reproduced countless times and is based in part on the concept of the Apocalypse in the Revelation of St. John. The archangel Michael was the commander of the Army of God and squared off against evil forces in the world war between the forces of Heaven and Hell.

The obverse of the Isle of Man Silver Angel Coin features the effigy of Queen Elizabeth II. Designed by Jody Clark, who recently created the fifth-generation effigy of Her Majesty for the Royal Mint of England, this right-profile portrait depicts the Queen wearing the royal diadem crown upon her head.

2018 Isle of Man Noble 1oz Silver Proof Bullion Coin

The English noble coins were available from 1344 until the reign of King Edward IV in 1464 when the period of so-called Heavy Coinage resulted in a new version of the noble known as the Gold Angel. The original noble designs issued by Englands ruling monarchs featured various reverse designs, but many shared a similar theme of a ship sailing on the horizon on the obverse.

All of these 2018 1 oz Isle of Man Silver Noble Coins borrow heavily from that concept for the reverse design. Each of the individual Isle of Man Silver Nobles you purchase here today come with an individual capsule and what the mint calls a “proof quality” finish. This indicates the presence of frosted design elements and a proof background field for the silver coin.

On the reverse of the 2018 1 oz Isle of Man Silver Noble Coin, youll find a Viking long ship on the horizon. This is a fitting choice for a noble coin for the Isle of Man. Inhabited since 6,500 BC, the Isle of Man was ruled over for long periods of time by Norseman from the 9th century onward. In fact, King Magnus III, King of Norway, ruled over the Isle of Man as the King of Mann and the Isles.

The obverse side of the 2018 Isle of Man Silver Noble Coin features an effigy of Queen Elizabeth II. This right-profile portrait was created by Jody Clark, who also created the current Royal Mint of England effigy of the Queen. The ruling monarch of Britain, which now controls the Isle of Man as a crown dependency, is considered the Lord of Mann.

After Pegasus had helped Perseus rescue Andromeda, he was carried to Mount Helicon where he was entrusted to the care of the Muses.

Many wanted to capture Pegasus but no one could work out how to tame such a magnificent creature.  After being advised to sleep in the temple of Athena, Bellerophon saw the goddess before him holding a golden bridle.  When he awoke he was alone but the bridle remained.  He ran from the temple and found Pegasus drinking at a spring.  Bellerophon put the charmed bridle on the winged horse’s head with little difficulty and, with the bridle in place, Pegasus became gentle and tame and Bellerophon became his master.
