Issued by the Perth Mint, this commemorative release marks 225 years since Governor Philip Gidley King established the colony’s first official currency regulations in 1800. Drawing inspiration from the iconic Spanish Pillar Dollar, this 1 oz silver coin pays tribute to one of the most pivotal documents in early Australian colonial history

The proclamation demonstrated remarkable economic foresight by deliberately overvaluing certain coins to prevent them from leaving the colony, particularly the Spanish dollar, which was assigned a value of five shillings. This intentional manipulation of currency values was designed to address the chronic shortage of coinage in the colony, as sailors and merchants would otherwise take valuable coins back to their home countries.

On the obverse of 2025 Australian Silver 225th Anniversary of Australian Proclamation Coin, you’ll find the first official Australian coin portrait of King Charles III. Designed by Dan Thorne, this left-profile effigy shows His Majesty without a crown, reflecting the new era of the Australian monarchy.

The reverse of 2025 1 oz Silver 225th Anniversary of Australian Proclamation Coins depicts imagery from the Spanish Pillar Dollar—also known as the “piece of eight”—which was struck in Spanish America between the 16th and 19th centuries. The coin not only includes the design elements of the original Spanish Pillar Dollar, but also its engravings, including the Mo mint mark from Mexico City, where many of the original coins were produced.
