The first issue of the Mythical Creatures series was struck from one ounces of 99.9% silver in BU quality and is dedicated to the Sea Serpent, The motive shows a depiction of a gigantic sea serpent in the shimmering sea. Above is the inscription “THE SEA SERPENT”.

Mythical Creatures – Sea Serpent 1 oz Silver 2024 is the first value from the Mythical Creatures series. The product depicts the Sea Serpent, which is a mythical creature often described in folklore and legends of various cultures as a giant snake or dragon that inhabits oceans and large bodies of water. Its appearance and features vary from story to story, but it is usually depicted as a long, waving creature with reptilian features that can strike fear into sailors.

The reverse shows the coat of arms of Niue, which is surrounded by nautical details. The weight and fineness as well as the denomination and year of issue are also included in the design.

Sea serpents are among the most fearsome sea monsters and appear in stories by the Roman poet Virgil. Sightings of the mystical creatures by sailors, which are said to have taken place mainly in the North Atlantic and in bays off Norway, presumably go back to the so-called oarfish.
