The Norns – three ancient seeresses of the race of giants – wove and guarded the fate of all existence. Urd, Werdanda, and Skuld – the Past, the Present, and What Is Yet to Come. Three sisters whose names are the very rhythm of time.
Their home was the well of Urd, a sacred source of wisdom and destiny. There, in the half-light of the tangled roots, the Whispering Ones watered the tree with water and white clay from the well, healing its wounds and maintaining the balance of the world. For if it were to wither, the fate of gods and men alike would come to an end.
Every day they spun the golden threads of life. From their weaving, human destinies were born – delicate, sometimes tangled, and occasionally abruptly cut by the edge of their shears. The Norns appeared at births to grant a name and a fate to each new life. And when the time of death came, one of them would sever the thread of life, ending the soul’s journey through the earthly world.
Urd, the eldest of the Norns, stands at the roots of Yggdrasil, gazing into the waters of her well, where the shadows of days gone by are reflected. Her name means “that which has been,” and it is in this ancient wisdom that her strength lies. Every event, action, and decision that has already occurred flows to her like a river of memories. From them, Urd weaves the threads of fate, teaching that the past forms the foundation of the present and quietly guides the future.
Obverse: In Germania Mint’s interpretation, Urd is depicted as a beautiful and wise being, weaving the golden thread of the past and reaching for memories and experiences. Standing at the foot of the Tree of Life, she carefully observes what has passed. Her eyes appear blind, yet they see far more than others. Dressed in an elegant gown and adorned with jewelry imbued with magical power, she exudes calm and timeless wisdom.
Reverse: The Germania Mint double-headed eagle is surrounded by the roots of Yggdrasil and golden threads of fate. In some places, the threads are broken, symbolizing that while the past shapes destiny, it is possible to break free from it and begin a new path.
