The phoenix was originally mentioned in various texts of Greek culture and mythology. The writings of Hesiod and Herodotus in particular helped bring this mythological bird into the public’s consciousness. According to various accounts, the phoenix possesses special regenerative abilities. When it reaches old age, the creature suddenly bursts into flames only to be reborn out of the ashes. Today, the phoenix remains a popular symbol of renewal and resurrection.

The reverse of the silver medal shows a Korean phoenix with its wings spread wide and talons pointing toward the observer, giving it a dynamic, almost lively character.
