COIN INFORMATION
One of the most fearsome creatures to ever roam the earth, the sabre-tooth tiger is instantly recognizable thanks to its muscular build and extremely long canines. Part of the genus known as Smilodon, the sabre-tooth cat is now the subject of a brand-new coin from the prestigious Royal Canadian Mint. Produced in .9999 pure silver, these specimens include advanced security features and stunning original artwork by Julius Csotonyi.
Sabre-tooth tigers roamed the Americas as far back as 2.5 million years before going extinct around 10,000 years ago. Their decline was largely due to the environment, a lack of food, and advances in human hunting capabilities. The sabre-tooth tiger is part of a genus known as Smilodon, named in 1842. Today, scientists recognize three known species in this genus, which are named S. gracilis, S. fatalis, and S. populator.
The obverse of 2023 Canadian Smilodon Sabre-Tooth Tiger Silver Coins features Queen Elizabeth II in a portrait. This design was released in 2003 and is credited to Susanna Blunt. In it, Her Late Majesty is in right-profile relief without a crown atop her head. The mint describes this portrait as more mature and less formal than other portraits of the Queen.
On the reverse side of 2023 2 oz Canadian Smilodon Silver Coins, there is a sabre-tooth tiger design. In this image, we see the tiger leaping straight toward us with an open jaw. This thrilling design is credited to Julius Csotonyi, a paleoartist based in Canada. Next to the design you will find a micro-engraving security feature that consists of a maple leaf and the number 23, corresponding to the year of release.
