Britannia has graced British coins for centuries and her iconography has evolved through the ages to reflect the nation she represents. In 1987, a stunning vision of Britannia was created by sculptor Philip Nathan for a new bullion coin. His classically inspired interpretation presents the icon with carefully chosen symbols – a shield for protection, an olive branch for peace and a trident for her connection with the sea.

The year 2027 marks the 40th anniversary of the introduction of our Britannia gold bullion coin and the 30th anniversary of the silver coin, both featuring Philip Nathan’s iconic design. To celebrate the occasion, we have updated the gold and silver coins in the range to feature ‘40’ and ‘30’ wave privy marks respectively and a background texture that showcases the anniversary numbers.

Every Britannia bullion coin includes four intricate visual security features that not only reduce the risk of counterfeiting but also make authentication and liquidation easy.

King Charles III now features on the obverse of 2027 1 oz Silver Britannia Coins. His Majesty debuted midway through the 2023 production cycle and was created in late 2022 by Martin Jennings. This new bust of Charles III is in left-profile relief and lacks a crown.

For the reverse design of 2027 British Silver Britannias, the mint continues to feature Philip Nathan’s depiction of Britannia. A powerful female allegory, she is shown in front-facing relief as she looks to her right with a Corinthian helmet on her head, a trident in her right hand, and the Union Jack shield in her left.
