Ants on the Möbius Strip:
Unlike ordinary surfaces, which always have two sides, the Möbius strip has no top or bottom.
The strip is one-sided, it is continuous, and the ants walk on it without distinguishing between beginning and end. In constant motion, one after the other, they follow the path that unfolds before them. On the endless strip, they write their story. In this one-sided labyrinth, they discover the eternal in every moment. They continue on a non-existent path and find the answer on their journey: The infinite is here, where they meet.

The Möbius strip is really simple to make. Just cut a strip of paper, half twist it, and then join the ends. You end up with a surface that has only one face, and can be walked along ad infinitum. It was discovered by Johann Benedict Listing and August Ferdinand Möbius back in 1858 as a mathematical object, but in is visual form, it can be traced back to at least the 3rd century, where it has been found depicted in Roman mosaics. In a more modern setting, it’s a style heavily utilised by the king of puzzling art, M.C. Escher.

The coin depicts four gilded ants walking around a simplified, antiqued Möbius strip, with the coin taking on the outer shape of it, instead of being round. You can actually trace the never-ending path of the hapless insects around it. It’s a neat concept for a coin, and it’s been executed with a fine sense of style. The obverse is a simple affair, but the Liberian coat-of-arms, one of the best looking of them all, in my opinion, has been gilded as well. Just 500 of these coins will be struck.

The reverse: of the coin depicts a mesmerising procession of ants moving across a Mobius strip, an impossible surface with only one side and one edge. The insects advance without beginning or end, symbolising infinite motion, collective discipline, and the quiet power of persistence. The flowing metallic bands of the Mobius strip intertwine seamlessly, while the gilded ants stand out in vivid contrast, their precise anatomy rendered in sharp High Relief.

On the obverse, presents the Coat of Arms of Liberia, elegantly centered within the coin’s sculptural triangular shape. Surrounding it are the inscriptions: “REPUBLIC OF LIBERIA” – the issuing country, “20 DOLLARS” – the face value, “1 OZ 9999 FINE SILVER” – the weight and fineness of the Silver, and “2026” – the year of issue.
