COIN INFORMATION

Silver Niue Hawksbill Turtle coins are traditionally produced in a 1 oz bullion version only each year. The New Zealand Mint follows the same design and motif concepts of other popular bullion coin programs, selecting a symbol that is relevant to the region and reproducing that same image on the reverse each year.

The New Zealand Mint is a privately-owned minting facility operating in Auckland. It produces a variety of commemorative and sovereign bullion coins for nations throughout the South Pacific, but New Zealand dollar coins and other paper bank notes for the nation are produced overseas at the Royal Canadian Mint and Royal Mint in London.

On the reverse side of the coin is the annual Hawksbill turtle design. The native sea creature is featured swimming amongst the warm waters of the South Pacific, with the design field featuring a frosted finish that brings the foamy look of the ocean to life. A small sliver on the coin’s left bears a mirror-like finish and includes the engraving “Turtle.”

The obverse side of the coin features Ian Rank-Broadley’s 1998 right-profile portrait of England’s Queen Elizabeth II. Her effigy is surrounded by engravings of her name, the nation of issue, the coin’s face value, and the year of issue.
