The SS Tilawa, a British passenger and cargo ship operated by the British India Steam Navigation Company, was carrying a substantial treasure when it was torpedoed by a Japanese submarine in November 1942 while en route from Bombay to Durban. Among its cargo were approximately 2,400 bars of silver weighing around 60 tons and valued at over £2 million at the time (equivalent to roughly £100 million today). This silver cargo was resurrected from the depths in 2017 and was recently used to strike a 2025 British Silver Britannia with a limited-edition privy mark.

Introduced in 1997, the British Silver Britannia was issued for more than 20 years with just one monarch featuring on the obverse of the coins. With the passing of Her Late Majesty Queen Elizabeth II in September 2022, the Royal Mint issued 2023 Britannias with both Her Late Majesty on the obverse and, later, with King Charles III on the obverse. The 2024 & 2025 series is the first to boast only coins with the king on the obverse.

The history of the British Silver Britannia is a unique one among major bullion collections. While the gold coins debuted in 1987, the Silver Britannia didn’t debut until a decade later in 1997. From 1997 to 2010, the Royal Mint used alternating designs of Britannia on the reverse.

During that same period, three different portraits of Her Late Majesty Queen Elizabeth II featured on the obverse. The shortest-lived was Raphael Maklouf’s third-generation bust of the Queen used only in 1997. From 1998 to 2015, Ian Rank-Broadley’s portrait of the Queen featured and from 2016 to 2023, Jody Clark’s bust of the Queen was used.

King Charles III now features on the obverse of 2025 1 oz Silver Britannia Coins. His Majesty debuted midway through the 2023 production cycle and was created in late 2022 by Martin Jennings. This new bust of Charles III is in left-profile relief and lacks a crown.

For the reverse design of 2025 British Silver Britannias, the mint continues to feature Philip Nathan’s depiction of Britannia. A powerful female allegory, she is shown in front-facing relief as she looks to her right with a Corinthian helmet on her head, a trident in her right hand, and the Union Jack shield in her left.
