Rwanda: Nautical Ounce – 155 years of the Cutty Sark 1oz Silver 2024 is a unique product from the “Nautical Ounce” series depicting the “Cutty Sark” which was one of the fastest sailing ships of her size and time and set a number of records. She was one of the last clippers to be built for maritime trade.

The coin is minted from pure silver Ag.999, weighing one troy ounce, diameter 40 mm. Bayerisches Hauptmünzamt is responsible for issuing the entire Nautical Ounce collection, but it is worth adding that the entire collection is guaranteed by the government of Rwanda and each coin is an official tender in the issuer’s country.

Cutty Sark was built in Dumbarton, Scotland in 1869. Its owner John ‘Jock’ Willis, designer Hercules Linton and many of its crew members over the years were from Scotland. But despite its proud Scottish heritage, London was to be Cutty Sark’s home port.

On its maiden voyage, the ship departed London on 15 February 1870, bound for Shanghai.

On this outward voyage the ship carried a general cargo, including wine, spirits and beer and manufactured goods. After successfully reaching China on 31 May, the ship was loaded with 1,305,812 lbs of tea. After only 25 days in port in Shanghai the ship sped back to London, arriving on 13 October the same year.

Features the Cutty Sark in sail with a stylized compass in the background. The inscriptions “Cutty Sark,” “2024,” nautical instruments and the purity are listed along the rim.

Reverse

Displays the official seal of Rwanda and the face value of 50 Francs.
