The fourth issue in the Australia Zoo Series from the Royal Australian Mint was struck from one ounce of silver and is dedicated to the Southern White Rhinoceros. The motive features a detailed depiction of a white rhinoceros with four birds perched on its horns and upper body. The characteristic depiction refers to the alarming function of the birds, which is used by the lumbering rhinoceros in case of danger. Above the rhino is the inscription “AUSTRALIA ZOO – SOUTHERN WHITE RHINOCEROS”. The weight and fineness complete the design. The reverse features the Jody Clark portrait of Queen Elizabeth II. The years of her reign, the denomination “1 DOLLAR” and the inscriptions “ELIZABETH II” and “AUSTRALIA 2023” are also included in the design.

The southern white rhinoceros is the most abundant rhino species, with an estimated population of about 20,000 individuals, but is listed as “potentially endangered” by the IUCN. As a grazer, it prefers the African short grass savannahs, such as in Kenya, Namibia and South Africa, as its habitat. There it lives mostly as a solitary animal and spends half of the day feeding. Males of the southern white rhinoceros can reach an impressive weight of 3.5 tons, whereas the females weigh up to 2 tons with a body length of about 3.50 meters.
