COIN INFORMATION

This is the fifth design in the Vivat Humanitas (long live humanity) series issued by the Pressburg Mint based in Bratislava, the capital of Slovakia.

The Vivat Humanitas series celebrates achievements of humankind. This year’s release celebrates the achievement of the democratic system. In the foreground, there is an ancient greek column with the lettering “δημοκρατία”, meaning democracy in greek and an eye surrounded by a traditional greek pattern. Left side is showing ancient greek parliament, right side is showing an Acropolis rendition.

Tokelau, known previously as the Tokelau Islands, is a dependent territory of New Zealand in the southern Pacific Ocean. It uses the New Zealand Dollar as circulation currency, but has been issuing a variety of non-circulating coins since 1978, and has also authorised some foreign mints to issue bullion coins under its jurisdiction.

The obverse: of the coin features the (unofficial) “Public Seal of Niue”. It has what looks like a plant arrangement at centre, within a double ornamental circle, itself surrounded by a circle of sea shells. This is crowned with St Edward’s Crown (a symbol of the United Kingdom, the monarch of which is ultimately the Head of State of Niue), Around above between the two, the inscription PUBLIC SEAL OF NIUE. Below that, a ribbon carries the motto ATUA NIUE TUKULAGI on two lines, below which two crossed katoua (Niue fighting clubs) Around above, the name of the country and the date of issue: NIUE 2023. Around below, the face value 2 DOLLARS.
