COIN INFORMATION

Niue, a sovereign state in free association with New Zealand, uses two official legal tender currencies. The New Zealand Dollar is the circulation currency for daily transactions, while the government also authorises legal tender coins in the Niue Dollar currency for collector’s purposes.

A number of mints issue a large variety of coins under the authority of Niue. Most of these are commemorative and collector issues dedicated to historical or general popular culture themes not related to Niue itself. Many of them are in standard bullion sizes – typically, one ounce of silver (abbreviated as 1 oz Ag, where “Ag” comes from the Latin word for silver, Argentum). Those issued at prices much higher than their bullion value are separately listed in the Non-Circulating Legal Tender (NCLT) silver ounce section of the site.

Unlike them, this coin is targeted at bullion investors and was initially released at a price close to the value of its precious metal content.

This is the fourth design in the Icon series of premium bullion coins by the Pressburg Mint, and the first one issued for Niue (the earlier editions were for Tokelau). The coins in the series have a new design every year and are about the beauty of mathematics. The 2023 design is dedicated to the memory of Queen Elizabeth II.

The mint says about it:
The Greek word for image, a work of art, a famous person or something of importance. These all are meanings of the word “icon”.

The obverse: of the coin features the (unofficial) “Public Seal of Niue”. It has what looks like a plant arrangement at centre, within a double ornamental circle, itself surrounded by a circle of sea shells. This is crowned with St Edward’s Crown (a symbol of the United Kingdom, the monarch of which is ultimately the Head of State of Niue), Around above between the two, the inscription PUBLIC SEAL OF NIUE. Below that, a ribbon carries the motto ATUA NIUE TUKULAGI on two lines, below which two crossed katoua (Niue fighting clubs) Around above, the name of the country and the date of issue: NIUE 2023. Around below, the face value 2 DOLLARS.

The reverse: design consists entirely of a textured surface of thin lines. These display a latent image of Queen Elizabeth II, crowned, facing the viewer, with an overlay of the the word ICON.
