COIN INFORMATION

The Premium bullion coin is the second issue of the new series Australian Antarctic Territory and is dedicated to one of the world’s largest mammals – the Humpback Whale (Megaptera novaeangliae).

The motive features a humpback whale jumping out of the water, as well as a female humpback whale with her two young. The upper edge of the coin features the inscription “HUMPBACK WHALE”, as well as the weight and the fineness. The reverse presents the portrait of Queen Elizabeth II, the dates of her reign “1952-2022”, the denomination “1 DOLLAR” and the year of issue “2023”. The coin was struck by the Royal Australian Mint from one ounce of 99.9% silver with a mintage of only 25,000 pieces worldwide.

The Australian Antarctic Territory is an area in Antarctica to which the state of Australia has laid claim since June 13th, 1933 under the Australian Antarctic Territory Acceptance Act. With a size of 5,896,500 square kilometers, the territory is almost 80% the size of Australia itself. Among the most famous inhabitants of the icy continent is the humpback whale.

The majestic animal prefers coastal waters with bays and estuaries. It can reach a body size of up to 15 meters and has a much larger flipper compared to its other brethren. Due to its breathtaking tricks and jumps out of the water, the humpback whale is also called the acrobat of the ocean. Equally fascinating is the special whale song of the mammals, which in fact consists of more than 622 different sounds. In the wild, the humpback whale can live up to 50 years – to this day, however, the threat from poachers is very great, which is why the whale has been listed as a protected species worldwide since 1966. The limited silver bullion coin is delivered in a protective capsule.

2023 1 oz Silver Humpback Whale Coins feature a group of humpback whales on the reverse field. The bottom half of this field showcases an adult humpback whale and two smaller ones swimming in the ocean. The top half shows another adult whale breaching the surface.

The obverse field of 2023 Royal Australian Mint Silver Humpback Whale Coins showcases the effigy of Queen Elizabeth II. This image was designed by Jody Clark and is the final portrait of Her Majesty to appear on coins. Clark was the youngest designer ever chosen to create a depiction of the Queen. She’s seen in right-profile relief wearing the Royal Diadem crown. Identifying marks of the coin surround this image.
