COIN INFORMATION
The 2023 $1 Australian Antarctic Territory – Emperor Penguin 1oz silver coin is a beautifully designed silver coin issued by the Royal Australian Mint. The coin is the first coin of the Australian Antarctic Territory series and features an image of an Emperor Penguin on its reverse side. The obverse side of the coin features the effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II along with the country, denomination, and year of issue.
The Australian Antarctic Territory (AAT) is a part of East Antarctica claimed by Australia as an external territory. The territory’s history dates to a claim on Enderby Land made by the United Kingdom in 1841, which was subsequently expanded and eventually transferred to Australia in 1933. It is the largest territory of Antarctica claimed by any nation by area.
Named in honour of naturalist Johann Forster, who travelled with Captain James Cook on his second voyage of discovery (1772 – 1775), the Emperor Penguin (Aptenodytes forsteri) is the largest of all penguins, growing to around a metre tall. Emperors are endemic to Antarctica, including the Australian Antarctic Territory. They are well adapted to the frigid southern continent and alone among penguins, are capable of breeding during the icy winter.
Once regarded as a species of least concern, Emperor Penguins are now classed as near threatened, due to reduction of their food source from commercial fishing and climate change induced loss of sea ice.
The obverse: of the coin depicts the crowned old bust of Queen Elizabeth II facing right, wearing the Royal Diamond Diadem crown worn for her Coronation (effigy known as the “Fifth Portrait” worldwide but “Sixth Portrait” in Australia, where the Queen’s portrait by Vladimir Gottwald was fifth), The Queen also wears the Coronation Necklace; originally made for Queen Victoria in 1858, it was also worn at the coronations (as Queen’s Consort) of Queen Alexandra in 1902, Queen Mary in 1911 and Queen Elizabeth (the Queen mother) in 1937, Unlike on British coinage, the effigy is “uncouped” (includes the Queen’s shoulders). In small letters on the left, the artist’s initials JC (for Jody Clark), Running continuously around the rim is the monarch’s legend, the date of issue and the face value: ELIZABETH II 1952 – 2022 · AUSTRALIA 2023 · 1 DOLLAR ·. The legend is interrupted by the “memorial” inclusion of the dates of the Queen’s reign, 1952 – 2022.
The reverse: of the coin features a parent Emperor Penguin and its offspring standing at the edge of the Antarctic ice. Behind them a queue of Emperor Penguins approaches the ocean, to a backdrop of the ice floes, Around above, the inscription EMPEROR PENGUIN, below which in smaller letters the precious metal content 1 oz .999 SILVER (one troy ounce of 99.9% silver), The designer’s initials AWB (for Adam William Ball) are on the ice below left
