COIN INFORMATION
The third issue of the series Australia’s Coat of Arms is dedicated to the coat of arms of Queensland. It is Australia’s oldest coat of arms and was granted by Queen Victoria in 1893.
The motive depicts a brolga crane, the official bird of the state of Queensland. A bull, a sheep, gold and wheat can be seen in the background, symbolizing the colony’s great wealth. The denomination “ONE DOLLAR” and a band with the inscription “QUEENSLAND” are also included in the design, featuring a majestic stag, as well as the portrait of Queen Elizabeth II. The stag was introduced to Australia by Queen Victoria. She gifted a herd of deer from her royal hunting grounds to the colony at the time. Nowadays, the animal symbolizes the connection with the old world and the former colonies of England. Other floral elements as well as the weight, the fineness and the Latin motto “AUDAX AT FIDELIS” complete the design. The coin was struck by the Royal Australian Mint from one ounce of 99.9% silver with a mintage of only 50,000 pieces worldwide.
The obverse: of the coin shows, in a small circle on the left, the crowned old head of Queen Elizabeth II facing right, wearing the Royal Diamond Diadem crown and the Victoria Coronation necklace worn for her Coronation. This is her effigy known as the “Fifth Portrait” worldwide and “Sixth Portrait” in Australia, in “uncouped” version – showing the Queen’s shoulders and not terminating at the neck as the normal version. On the left, in small letters on the Queen’s shoulder, the artist’s initials JC (for Jody Clark). Around above, the monarch’s legend and the date of issue: ELIZABETH II 1952 – 2022 · AUSTRALIA 2023. The legend is interrupted by the “memorial” inclusion of the dates of the Queen’s reign, 1952 – 2022, Most of the obverse is taken by the image of a stag, which is one of the supporters of the Coat of Arms of Queensland. Visible in the background is a Maltese Cross overlaid with the Crown of Saint Edward, and a knight’s helmet decorated with mantling (strips of cloth) – both also parts of the state Coat of Arms, Around below left, the motto AUDAX AT FIDELIS – Latin motto which is on a ribbon below the Coat of Arms of the state, which means “Bold but faithful”.
The reverse: design features a brolga – a large bird which is one of the supporters of the Coat of Arms of Queensland. In the background, a bull and ram surrounded by wheat – symbols of the agricultural beginning of the state, and displayed on the Coat of Arms, The designer’s logo, a stylised A over B (for Aaron Baggio) is on the left, On a shield above left, the face value and denomination: ONE DOLLAR, below which workman tools (spade and pick) symbolising the state’s prosperity – also present on the Coat of Arms, In a ribbon below, the inscription QUEENSLAND.

Lovely coin because of the animals on it and they’re on both sides. I love the big bird with the plants behind him and the detail. 🙂
