COIN INFORMATION

This design is the fourth release in the popular pirate-themed Black Flag series of premium bullion coins, and features the notorious Captain William Moody’s ship, The Rising Sun.

Throughout the 17th and 18th centuries, pirates ruled the seven seas with their ships proudly displaying their uniquely menacing black flags to declare themselves in battle. Each release in this popular series struck by The Perth Mint features a famous pirate along with the emblem they associated with to celebrate some of the most fearsome figures in history. The previous releases in this series have included Blackbeard and his ship Queen Anne’s Revenge, Black Bart and his ship the Royal Fortune and Ching Shih with her ship known as the Red Flag Fleet, Continuing the iconic Black Flag series from The Perth Mint, the fourth release features William Moody’s notorious ship, The Rising Sun. Moody was a pirate known for ransacking and torching countless ships in the Caribbean for a short time from 1718 to 1719. Soon after, Captain Moody’s crew resented his behaviour toward the sailors on the ship. The crew forced Moody, along with a few of his supporters, into a small boat and set sail without them. Captain Moody was never seen again and is presumed lost at sea.

The obverse: of the coin shows the crowned mature head of Queen Elizabeth II facing right (her effigy known as the “Fourth Portrait”). The Queen wears the “Girls of Great Britain and Ireland” diamond tiara, a wedding gift from Queen Mary (Her Majesty’s grandmother) in 1947 – which she also has on the Machin and the Gottwald portraits.

The reverse: of the coin shows a representation of Captain Moody’s ship, The Rising Sun, along with a burning ship in the background. The design of a skull is formed from the smoke of the burning ship, Around above, the inscription THE RISING SUN. Separated from this by two skull-and-bones motifs, around below BLACK FLAG: WILLIAM MOODY 1oz .9999 Ag (Ag is abbreviated from Argentum, the Latin word for silver), The Perth Mint’s P mint mark is on the right. The designer’s initials LB (for Lucas Bowers) are below right in the rigging of the ship, opposite the 1 in 1oz.
