Laos (officially the Lao People’s Democratic Republic) has been using the Lao Kip as its currency since 1955. In normal everyday circulation, it is normally served by banknotes and not coins, The country has however authorised some foreign mints to issue bullion coins under its jurisdiction. These are in standard bullion sizes, such as one ounce of silver – designated as 1 oz Ag, where Ag is abbreviated from Argentum, the Latin word for silver, This coin is the third release in the Tiger (Panthera Tigris) series of premium bullion coins, and is dedicated to the Indochinese tiger.

The Indochinese tiger (Panthera tigris corbetti) is a tiger subspecies found in Myanmar, Thailand, Lao PDR, Vietnam, Cambodia and southwestern China. They prefer mostly forested habitats such as tropical rainforests, evergreen forests, deciduous forests, and tropical and subtropical dry broadleaf forests.

The obverse: of the coin depicts the Pha That Luang (Lao: ທາດຫຼວງ or ພຣະທາດຫລວງ) – a gold-covered large Buddhist stupa in the centre of the capital city of Laos, Vientiane. The shrine dates back to the 3rd century AD, and is is generally regarded as the most important national monument in Laos and a national symbol; it forms part of the national emblem of Laos, Around above, the name of the issuing authority: BANK OF THE LAO PDR (the central bank of the Lao People’s Democratic Republic), Around below, the face value 500 KIP, In small letters around left and right, the precious metal content: 1 oz Ag 999 (one troy ounce of 99.9% silver).

The reverse: design shows the profile of a tiger looking over his shoulder. His mouth is open and teeth are showing, indicating that the tiger has given a warning sign of its presence. He is surrounded by forest foliage, Around left, the inscription PANTHERA TIGRIS (the Latin name of the species), Around right, the date of issue 2022, Around above, 1 OZ FINE SILVER .999 (one troy ounce of 99.9% silver).
