COIN INFORMATION

The coin portrays a dramatic close-up impression of the magnificent bird’s head. The artistry highlights its superbly effective eyes, which allow it to pinpoint prey from a great height, and a large, hooked beak, which it uses to rip the hide and meat from prey. As well as the inscription AUSTRALIAN WEDGE-TAILED EAGLE and The Perth Mint’s ‘P’ mintmark, the reverse also includes the coin’s weight, fineness and its 2022 year-date.

Named for its long, distinctively shaped tail, the Australian wedge-tailed eagle has a wingspan of more than 2.5 metres. With the ability to fly tirelessly for many hours, it’s known to soar at altitudes of 2,000 metres and beyond on thermal air currents rising from Australia’s sun-baked terrain.

The 2022 Wedge-Tailed Eagle bullion coin was struck by the Perth Mint from one ounce of 99.99% pure silver. The coin was first issued in 2014 and has since enjoyed great popularity among investors and collectors. It was the first collaboration of a US Mint engraver with a foreign mint. The design by John Mercanti features a close-up of the head of a Wedge-Tailed Eagle – Australia’s largest bird of prey. The detailed design highlights the eagle’s plumage, eyes and large, hooked beak. The motive is framed by the inscriptions “AUSTRALIAN WEDGE-TAILED EAGLE” and “2022 1oz 9999 SILVER”. The traditional mintmark “P” of the  is also included in the design. A letter engraved with a microlaser, which can only be seen under a magnifying glass, ensures the coin’s increased resistance to counterfeiting.

On the obverse side of 2022 Australian Wedge Tail Eagle 1 oz Silver Coins is an effigy of Queen Elizabeth II. Her Majesty is shown here in right-profile relief at the age of 89 wearing the George IV State Diadem Crown. The Queens portrait featured here was originally created for the Royal Mint in 2015 by Jody Clark and first featured on Australian coins in 2018. The inscriptions on this side read ELIZABETH II, AUSTRALIA, and 1 DOLLAR.
