In the famous Chinese text called Classic of Mountains and Seas from the 4th century BC, the different parts of the phoenix are associated with different character traits. The head of the bird represents virtue, while the back symbolizes propriety. Further, the wing denotes duty, the chest signifies compassion, and the abdomen stands for trust.
The phoenix is an iconic mythological bird that has appeared in numerous folktales across the centuries. Typically, it is described as having a flame-like appearance, with some even claiming the bird to be born of the sun. In the Greek tradition, the phoenix is known for its regenerative abilities. However, in Chinese culture, the phoenix is seen as a sacred bird that brings good fortune whenever it appears.
Obverse
The obverse of 2022 Australian Chinese Myths and Legends Phoenix 1 oz Coins features Queen Elizabeth II. This 2015 portrait was designed by Jody Clark, who at the age of 33 became the youngest engraver to have a portrait accepted for coinage by the Royal Mint.
