The Australian one ounce silver piece (abbreviated as 1 oz and designated with Ag for “silver”) is a bullion and commemorative coin format. Uniquely, in Australia there are two mints authorised to strike legal tender: the Royal Australian Mint (which also makes the country’s circulating coinage) and the Perth Mint which only makes collector and bullion coins, as well as other bullion products, Both mints endeavour to create coins with attractive designs, and to introduce new designs and themes often, in order to raise the numismatic value of the coins over the value of previous metal used, Struck from 1oz of 99.99% pure silver, this limited bullion coin for investors portrays one of Australia’s most celebrated natural gold nuggets.

Stuart Devlin’s portrayal of Little Hero first appeared on the 1986 Australian Nugget 1/10oz gold coin. More than three and a half decades later, The Perth Mint is delighted to reprise the design for investors seeking precious metal in trusted legal tender format. Discovered in 1890 near Marble Bar in Western Australia, the 333oz nugget sparked significant public excitement when it was exhibited at the Union Bank office in Perth.

The obverse of the coin depicts the crowned old head of Queen Elizabeth II facing right, wearing the Royal Diamond Diadem crown and the Victoria Coronation necklace worn for her Coronation. This is her effigy known as the “Fifth Portrait” worldwide and “Sixth Portrait” in Australia, in “uncouped” version – showing the Queen’s shoulders and not terminating at the neck as the normal version, on the left, in small letters on the Queen’s shoulder, the artist’s initials J.C (for Jody Clark), Running continuously around the rim is the monarch’s legend and the face value: ELIZABETH II AUSTRALIA · 1 DOLLAR ·.

The reverse of the coin portrays the Little Hero Nugget on a background of radial lines. In tiny letters in the lowest part of the nugget, the initials of the designer of the original coin series: SD (for Stuart Devlin), Around below in the central circle, the name of the nugget and the year of its discovery: LITTLE HERO 1890, Around above in the rim, the name of the coin series: AUSTRALIAN NUGGET. Around below, the date of issue and the precious metal content, 2022 1oz 9999 SILVER (one troy ounce of 99.99% gold). The P mint mark of the Pert Mint is in the rim on the right.

There is also an authentication feature on the reverse in the form of a micro-laser engraved letter only detectable with a magnifying glass.
