The Silver coin in proof quality was struck from one ounce of 99.99% pure silver and is dedicated to the auroras known as Aurora Australis, which occur in the southern hemisphere. The motive presents the natural spectacle in fascinating shades of turquoise and purple. The lower half of the coin shows a representation of a small boat with the engraved inscription “AURORA AUSTRALIS”. The design gives the impression that the viewer is sitting in the small boat on a lonely lake, marveling at the auroras that appear behind a mountain range and are reflected in the lake. The reverse of the coin features the effigy of Queen Elizabeth II as well as the weight, fineness, denomination and year of issue.

The term “aurora” was first used to describe this phenomenon by Galileo Galilei in honor of the Roman goddess of the dawn. Unlike the northern auroras, which have the scientific name “Aurora Borealis”, the Aurora Australis can be observed throughout the year. The sister phenomenon of the Aurora Borealis in the southern hemisphere is often far less known than the Aurora of the north, but by no means less spectacular. The Aurora Australis silver proof coin in color is issued with a mintage of only 2,000 pieces worldwide and will be delivered in the original box including a numbered certificate of authenticity.

Obverse

Queen Elizabeth II is featured on the obverse field of 2022 Tuvalu Aurora Australis 1 oz Silver Coins. This portrait is the result of a contest held by The Royal Mint in 1997 for the Fourth-Generation effigy of the Queen. The winner was Ian Rank-Broadley, whose iconic design debuted the following year to much acclaim. Youll also find inscriptions of the coins hallmarks on the obverse field.
