Coin Information

The Perth Mint’s Australian Bird of Paradise depict the Trumpet Manucode, a species found in the unspoiled wilderness of Queensland’s Cape York.

Larger male birds measure around 31 centimetres. They have glossy blue-black plumage with elongated horn-like ear tufts and a mane of loose neck feathers.

Scientifically, the Trumpet Manucode is known as Phonygammus keraudrenii.

Phonygammus combines Greek words for ‘sound’ and ‘wedding’ – reflecting the bird’s loud, harsh call during its courtship ritual. That it is ‘wedded to sound’ forms an obvious connection with its common name.

Keraudrenii marks the bird’s association with Pierre François Keraundren (1769 – 1858), a French surgeon-naturalist who sailed to Australia with Nicholas Baudin aboard the Géographe in 1801. The expedition is credited with the discovery of more than 2,500 unknown species.

The Bird Of Paradise is famously associated with northeastern Queensland and the island of New Guinea, where local tribes use its beautiful plumes as currency. The Perth Mint launched the Bird of Paradise series in 2018 with the Victoria’s Riflebird. In 2019, the series continues with the Manucodia, a black bird with purple and green plumes and whose name is derived from the Javanese term “manuk dewata”. “Manuk” means bird and “dewata” means gods.

The 2019 Silver Bird of Paradise Manucodia is beautifully struck in .9999 pure silver with a limited mintage of only 50,000.
